Flying Whammy
Flying Whammy is a PDX based pop punk band, driven by the desire to perform above all else, from playing under bridges and in basements to the 2021 Astoria Seafood and Wine festival, Headlining Dante’s, and the Support Your Junk Tour through California where they played at Old Ironsides in Sacramento and 924 Gillman in Berkeley, they know how to hit the audience hard and give an unforgettable show, if the stage is there, they don't care. Whether there's ten people watching or tens of thousands. Either the music or the group of friends making fun of each other on stage, Flying Whammy is gonna get the audience's attention one way or another.
Flying whammy started in 2017 with playing music being the only goal and having to find their own path through it. They've stuck together as the band's identity formed and they grew as musicians and people. The band consists of singer and guitarist Ryan Caputo, drummer Jacob Jonason and bassist Jason Hagensen. Their sound has been evolving naturally into a catchy alternative pop punk sound that draws heavy influences from bands like Foo Fighters, Green Day, Blink 182, Nirvana and Sum 41. Fast paced punk combined with northwestern grunge makes Flying Whammy a punchy, hard hitting sound with lyrics about breakups, drugs, growing up and complaining just to complain, anyone can relate to the struggles of the band.
“I really like their stuff for a couple reasons. The main one is the singers voice. For me its perfect, it resonates with me on every level and in so many of the songs, I dont think its intentional, I just think its how his voice is but everything sounds like a crisis. You know you get to the rising action and your just a hair away from the crescendo, hes always right there.”
